China Hub

Academic China Knowledge and Experience Network (China Hub)

The Bavarian ‘Academic China Knowledge and Experience Network’ (China Hub) is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to promote personal and institutional China expertise in the Bavarian university and science landscape.

BayCHINA is responsible for the administrative implementation and coordination of the China Hub project. In addition to the cooperating project partners UBT, LMU and TUM, the China Hub is open to all interested public universities and research institutions and their employees in Bavaria.

Objective and target group

The China Hub connects Bavarian China actors, their knowledge and their competences, and at the same time establishes a (co-)learning system for the acquisition and transfer of China competence. The system reacts dynamically to new developments and needs in academic cooperation with China by generating and circulating knowledge.

By China competence we are referring to the abilities and skills of academic actors (individuals/institutions) to act and solve problems successfully in relation to China and in accordance with their own goals and plans.

To develop China competence, scientific actors in Bavaria are provided with access to knowledge, information and experience resources relating to scientific cooperation with China.

Another characteristic of the project is the systematic involvement of (junior) scientists and administrative staff, who actively contribute existing knowledge and experience from their cooperation practice to the process as well as formulating specific needs for missing knowledge.

The China Hub identifies China-related knowledge and information needs as well as deficits across all institutions. By visualising, structuring and reflecting on them, the China Hub develops and implements target group-oriented information, workshop and training formats. With this approach of simultaneously identifying, aggregating and pooling information and knowledge, we want to avoid ‘blind spots’.

The participating scientific actors (individual / group / institution) gain access to a broad, China-competent scientific community.

Measures

The China Hub is primarily based on three measures:

1) Open Space events, which connect scientific actors as co-creators and regularly identify the need for information and knowledge on scientific cooperation with the P.R. China in the Bavarian region.

2) Imparting target-group-specific China knowledge in the form of training courses and expert workshops based on the current need for the development of individual and institutional China expertise at Bavarian universities as determined by the Open Space events.

3) The development of a regional communication network or a regional China-Hub-Portal to supplement the various established channels, most of which are university-specific, through which offers of China knowledge, experience and information are made available to an extended target group.
