Bavarian-Chinese academic cooperation
For more than 35 years, the Free State of Bavaria has been in contact with China, also in the context of the partnership with Shandong Province (1987), Guangdong Province (2004) and Sichuan Province (2023). This bilaterally consolidated relationship achieved many successes of economic, cultural and academic exchange. More than 260 cooperation agreements between Bavarian universities and Chinese universities in 2024 document Bavaria's great interest in Chinese science and vice versa.
The attractiveness of Bavaria as a science location for Chinese researchers and universities is confirmed not only by the numerous university cooperations, but also by the number of Chinese students in Bavaria, which remains unchanged at a high level and has now exceeded the mark of 9,242 students (winter semester 2023/2024).
Our mission
In response to the increased interest of Bavarian universities and researchers in academic cooperation with China, the Bavarian University Center for China (BayCHINA) was established at the University of Bayreuth in 2007 in consultation between the Bavarian Rectors' Conferences (Universität Bayern e.V. and Hochschule Bayern e.V.) and the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts with the aim of strengthening academic relations between China and Bavaria.
Following this mission, BayCHINA supports and promotes the concrete encounter between students and researchers of both regions, accompanies and advises cooperations in research & teaching, maintains contacts to Chinese academic institutions and acts as an information, networking and contact point.
