We are pleased to invite you to our Lunch Talk in November. This event is part of the series “Research, Teaching, and Working in the Chinese Academic System” and offers insights into the work of researchers and faculty members through personal accounts.

In this lunch talk, Dr. Hannes Gohli offers insights from recent field research in Guangxi's national pilot digital villages. Digital villages are jurisdictions in which officials have enlisted the support of tech companies to spearhead industrial restructuring. In addition to presenting individual and collective expectations among local populations, theoretically, the talk ponders how the datafication of (rural) society contributes to the Chinese Party-state’s capacity to select winning industries, companies and technologies for future industrial policy design. In the subsequent Q&A, Dr. Gohli will also discuss access restrictions, emotional labour and other challenges related to field research in China.

Dr. Hannes Gohli is a research assistant at the Chair of China Business and Economics at University of Würzburg.
