"Rund 90 % der von der EU als kritisch eingestuften Medikamente sind patentfreie Generika – ihre Wirkstoffe stammen heute überwiegend aus Asien, insbesondere aus China. Prof. Dominic Sachsenmaier: "Seventeenth-century Chinese Christianity, or the “Learning of Heaven,” was not shaped solely by intellectual efforts and spiritual quests. It was also impacted by hegemonic claims and efforts at institutional control by both the Chinese and Christian sides. Many tensions remained unresolved between two large power systems, including their subordinate institutions: the globalizing Catholic Church and the Chinese state and society. For instance, ethnic identities and policies played an important (and understudied) role in Late Ming Christian community. The paper argues that particularly a combination of micro- and macro-historical perspectives can help us understand how large power systems impacted religious life on the ground. "

Prof. Joan Judge (York University): "Scholars have debated the epistemic status of the Comprehensive Compendia of Myriad Treasures (wanbao quanshu 萬寶全書), a genre of daily-use texts widely reproduced in China from the sixteenth through the early twentieth centuries. This presentation seeks to deepen our understanding of both the content and the potential readership for these texts in the late imperial and Republican Chinese contexts. It does so by engaging in a close and contextualized examination of one section of the compendia that remained remarkably stable over the course of this period, the section on 'Pregnancy' (Zhongzi men 種子門). I first probe the sources for this section in an effort to determine the register of knowledge that it reproduced. This requires unraveling a complex amalgam of what could be characterized as works on bedchamber arts on the one hand, and scholarly medical treatises on the other. I then examine the different components of the section: its crude illustrations and mnemonic verses which both describe the development of the embryo, together with numerical calculations for determining the health and sex of the fetus, and recipes for managing the various ailments that might afflict the gestating woman. Throughout this analysis, I use intratextual methods to attempt to determine who the potential users of the text might have been: who, for example, would have been best served by the illustrations, the poems, the recipes, or a combination of them. I will also use intertextual methods to search for the audience for the 'Zhongzi men.' Here I will examine a hand-written gynecological manuscript from the Unschuld Collection that copied the contents of the section almost verbatim. This manuscript offers some sense of who read and valued the material on 'Gestation' in the myriad treasures enough to use it as an authoritative source."

Her 2023 book “Digit@l China – Surveillance Dictatorship and Technological Vanguard” analyses China’s ambivalent role as both a high-tech pioneer and an authoritarian surveillance state. Martin Heidegger spricht von der „Weltlosigkeit des Steins“. Der Vortrag greift die erst jüngst im Rahmen eines internationalen Symposiums („Haben Tiere, Pflanzen und Steine Welt?“) erörterte Aussage des deutschen Philosophen auf und geht ihr ausgehend von drei chinesischen Tuschmalereien nach. Enrico Mariutti (Independent Researcher and Analyst): "China’s pivotal role in the evolution of the global photovoltaic (PV) industry traces its ascent from a nascent exporter to an undisputed leader. Beginning in the early 2000s, China positioned itself as an export-oriented manufacturer, leveraging local government investments to build production capacity primarily for international markets. The 2010s marked a surge in dominance, fueled by substantial government subsidies that enabled China to capture over 50% of global module production by the decade’s end, surpassingcompetitors through economies of scale and innovation in manufacturing processes. By 2021, China’s share had risen to approximately 70%, and its investments exceeded USD 50 billion in new PV supply chains, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and outpacing Europe by a factor of ten. This trajectory culminated in current predominance, with China controlling over 80% of the global PV supply chain, including raw materials, wafers, cells, and modules. Data limitations, including proprietary data and incomplete supply chain disclosures, hinder accurate life cycle assessments (LCAs), leading to wide variability in carbon footprint estimates and underrepresentation of emissions from coaldependent processes. The intervention underscores the need for enhanced transparency, standardization, and reproducibility to address these gaps, particularly given China’s coal-intensive electricity grids and unaccounted factors like chemical consumption and land use effects."

Schon 2023 waren fast 297 Millionen Chinesinnen und Chinesen 60 Jahre alt oder älter, was einem Anteil von über 21 Prozent an der Gesamtbevölkerung entspricht. "The China-Europe Research Platform on Chinese Migration to and Beyond Europe (CERPE) is delighted to announce the 8th annual workshop, which will focus on the multifaceted phenomenon of Chinese migration and the complex negotiations of identities by Sinophone diasporas. This workshop seeks to deepen our understanding of transnational Chinese migrations and cultural representations from a broad spectrum of perspectives. Historically, Chinese migration has been driven by diverse motivations, ranging from economic pursuits like the mid-19th century Gold Rush in the United States, to seeking educational and entrepreneurial opportunities in the 20th century and beyond. In contemporary times, despite challenges such as geopolitical conflicts, economic downturns, and policies promoting decoupling and isolationism, Sinophone diasporas continue to evolve and diversify. This has resulted also in novel diasporic and societal responses in countries of migration destinations. Moreover, advancements in technology have catalyzed the formation of dynamic online communities and have fostered a rich variety of cultural and artistic expressions among Chinese migrants and their descendants. These expressions manifest across multiple platforms, including literature, fine arts, and digital media, and play a pivotal role in shaping communication and contemporary representations of Chineseness abroad. These depictions are crucial for understanding how Chinese and non-Chinese creators alike negotiate concepts of home and identity on local, national, and global scales.The 8th CERPE workshop invites junior and senior researchers within and outside the CERPE network to submit papers exploring both historical and contemporary aspects of Chinese migration and identity constructions. We are particularly interested in contributions that examine, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- The ongoing developments of Chinese migrations to Europe, North America, and beyond.
- The role of digital media, literary works, popular music, and film in expressing and shaping Sinophone identities abroad.

Prof. Dr. Iwo Amelung (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M.): "Die wohl bekannteste Zerstörung von Kulturgütern bzw. kulturellem Erbe in China ist die Plünderung und Verwüstung des kaiserlichen Sommerpalastes (Yuanmingyuan) durch französische und britische Truppen im Jahr 1860. Tatsächlich gehörten Zerstörung und Vernichtung von Bauwerken und kulturellen Objekten im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, einer Zeit zahlreicher militärischer Konflikte, zur traurigen Normalität. Sie waren so alltäglich, dass sie nur selten größere öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit erregten und – von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen – rasch wieder in Vergessenheit gerieten. Der Vortrag widmet sich zum einen weniger beachteten, aber ebenso bedeutsamen Fällen kriegsbedingter Zerstörung und Verluste. Zum anderen untersucht er die Bemühungen, Kulturgüter in bewaffneten Auseinandersetzungen vor der Vernichtung zu bewahren. Schließlich wird auch der Aspekt der Restitution von Kulturgütern nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs kurz beleuchtet. Es soll aufgezeigt werden, dass die Herausbildung einer Vorstellung vom Wert des „kulturellen Erbes“ zumindest teilweise als Reaktion auf Erfahrungen von Zerstörung in militärischen Konflikten zu verstehen ist. Abschließend werden die kulturellen und politischen Implikationen für gegenwärtige chinesische Diskurse thematisiert."

Dr. San-Hwan Lu: "Public housing is never merely a social service – it is an architecture of governance. This lecture traces how three housing regimes – Vienna’s social democracy, Hong Kong’s colonial managerialism, and Taiwan’s (post)-authoritarian transformations – translate political ideals into built form. Drawing on thinkers such as Foucault and Lefebvre, it examines housing as a moral and spatial technology that classifies citizens, organizes care, and embeds ideology in urban morphology. By comparing the Red Vienna courtyards, Hong Kong’s vertical estates, and Taiwan's trajectory from military dependents' villages to contemporary social housing, the lecture argues that “where you live” becomes a reflection of “who you are” within each society’s political imagination. Public housing thus emerges as a material archive of statehood – revealing not only how societies house their people, but also how they define belonging itself."

It remains the world’s largest coal user while also leading in renewable deployment and equipment manufacturing. This coexistence reflects a system in which the rapid build-out of low-carbon capacity has not necessarily displaced fossil energy, revealing the uneven and segmented nature of China’s energy transition. The lecture reviews China’s current energy mix, emission trends, and the main objectives of its 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). "To mark the year-end conclusion of the CrossAsia Talks on December 4, at 6 p.m., Mackenzie Cooley (Hamilton College, USA), Huiyi Wu (Centre Alexandre Koyré, France), and Shih-Pei Chen (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin) will give in their online lecture entitled 'Knowing an Empire: Early Modern Chinese and Spanish Worlds in Dialogue' an insight into the anthology of the same title. In this talk, Mackenzie Cooley, Huiyi Wu, and Shih-Pei Chen will talk about their recent publication — 'Knowing an Empire: Early Modern Chinese and Spanish Worlds in Dialogue' (published in August 2025 by Lever Press). This collective book, edited by Cooley and Wu, brings leading scholars across Latin American and Asian Studies to write about how the two vast empires, separated by thousands of miles, developed comparable systems to gather, order, and write knowledge about their local worlds. Through a new methodology of 'juxtapositional comparison,' this book reads the difangzhi 地方志 (local gazetteers) of China and the relaciones geográficas of the Spanish world in parallel. Knowing an Empire does not see the conveyance of information across an empire as a top-down process with an active center as a knowledge-maker. Instead, it amplifies a blend of voices that speak as much to imperial bureaucracy as to the rich local and Indigenous cultures, revealing these two early modern empires as diverse polities whose equilibria were constantly rebalanced among local powers. We will also give some glimpses into the book chapters, such as the two chapters in 'Part 2: Structures of Knowing' that discusses the use of Digital Humanities methods in studying the local gazetteers and the relaciones geográficas."

Professor Birgit HOPFENER: "How did the exhibition in the Chinese pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale entitled Continuum – Generation by Generation (buxi 不息) mobilize the concept of buxi, which translates literally as “endlessness” or “never ceasing”? What does it mean to conceive of art, the world, and oneself through the lens of buxi, as endlessly intrarelated? This paper delves into this question from a multi-pronged perspective. First, it explains the meaning of buxi and analyzes how the show engages with aesthetic, epistemological, social and political implications of art and the world conceived through a contemporary perspective on the concept of “endlessness”. Second, the paper explores how a reading of the show and the artworks – their adopted aesthetic strategies, media, techniques, and materialities – through the lens of buxi complicates the critical and aesthetic framework for contemporary art in the global context. Finally, the paper evaluates the engagement with buxi – and the respective alternative processual ontology and temporality of art and world – as a useful mode of decolonizing the discipline of art history, even as it emphasizes the importance of adopting a dynamic pluriversal approach that attends to the transcultural relations that shape and reshape the multiplicity of meanings of art in a global framework, its multiple and entangled critical and aesthetic discourses, and the complexity of power structures, and avoids obscuring significant contexts and experiences."

Auch Schiffe, die in umgekehrter Richtung unterwegs waren, nutzen diese Verbindung. Entlang besagter Verkehrsader und ihrer Verästelungen finden sich zahlreiche Inseln, Riffe, Sandbänke und Felsen. Karten, nautische Texte und andere Schriftquellen nennen ihre Namen. Häufig zirkulierten mehrere Bezeichnungen für einen Ort – wohl meist in Abhängigkeit unterschiedlicher Händlergruppen, Sprachen und Traditionen. Vermutlich waren Dolmetscher, Lotsen, Kapitäne und andere am Austausch entsprechender Kenntnisse beteiligt. Der Vortrag beleuchtet mehrere Toponyme, von denen einige erstmalig in Quellen des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts zu finden sind. Ihre chinesischen, malaiischen und portugiesischen Varianten stehen in vielfältiger Beziehung zueinander. Dies wirft weitere Fragen auf, die das jeweilige Umfeld berühren. Die gewählten Beispiele führen zu verschiedenen Küstenzonen, etwa zum Seribuat-Archipel, zu Eilanden an der Ostseite Hainans und in jene insulare Welt, die heute von Zhuhai verwaltet wird."

"Prof. Dr Karénina Kollmar-Paulenz is Professor of the Study of Religion and Central Asian Studies at the University of Bern. Her research focuses on the religious history of Tibet and Mongolia, Buddhist concepts of authority and legitimacy, and the relationship between religion and politics in Central Asia. On the occasion of his 90th birthday in the summer of this year, the 14th Dalai Lama declared that the institution of the Dalai Lamas should continue and that the search for and recognition of his reincarnation would be carried out 'according to the established tradition'. This lecture begins with a brief introduction to the concept of reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism. It then presents both the traditional Tibetan procedures for identifying a reincarnation and the current regulations issued by the Chinese government governing the selection process of so-called “living Buddhas”, placing them in their historical context. Building on this, the lecture discusses the religious and political implications of the reincarnation of the 14th Dalai Lama. The lecture will last approximately 45 to 60 minutes, followed by a discussion and the opportunity to ask questions."

This surge is in many ways an outcome of broader transformations of the post-socialist era such as economic liberalization, the rise of cultural capitalism, and the rapid digitization of everyday life. At the same time, the boom has unfolded under increasingly stringent media control, especially under Xi Jinping. How can we make sense of the scope, diversity, and popularity of fantasy fiction in this environment? Existing frameworks tend to read fantasy either as an escapist commodity, the inevitable outcome of a heavily commercialized cultural sphere, or as a subversive allegory, a coded mode of critique in a tightly monitored media environment. These two interpretive frameworks, fantasy as escapist commodity and fantasy as subversive allegory, offer important insights, but neither can account for the ideological and aesthetic diversity of contemporary Chinese fantasy worlds. Rather than normative analysis of fantasy fiction as distraction from reality or as coded modes of resistance, I argue in this talk for a more nuanced and historically-informed approach that studies Chinese fantasy fiction in relation to traditions of literary realism, the shifting structures of the cultural economy, and the evolving sensibilities of China’s digital publics."

Especially video games have emerged as a significant medium for shaping and negotiating cultural, social, and political identities. At the same time, play itself has become a ubiquitous logic, with practices of gamification extending into various aspects of everyday life. This lecture series aims to explore the opportunities, challenges, and critical questions arising from this transformation. "We cordially invite you to the first CrossAsia Talk of the new year. Prof. Dr. Hermann Kreutzmann (Freie Universität Berlin) will speak on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 6 p.m. on the topic 'Passages to Kashgar and Yarkand – 19th-Century Cross-Mountain Connections and Relations.' The lecture will explore European expeditions and geopolitical entanglements along the southern Silk Road in the 19th century. It will focus on the efforts of researchers to reach the trading cities of Kashgar and Yarkand, as well as on the rivalry among colonial powers for influence and economic advantage in Central Asia at that time. The term ‘Silk Road’ first appeared in Carl Ritter’s ‘Geography of Asia’ in 1838 and was further developed and popularised by Friedrich Freiherr von Richthofen in 1877. Subsequently, geographical exploration and the search for economic advantages went hand in hand with imperial ambitions as interest increasingly focused on the Celestial Mountains and oases of the southern Silk Road. The Tianshan Mountains and Kashgar became coveted destinations for European explorers who were denied access to forbidden cities by local potentates. The prominent Berlin geographers Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter motivated young scholars such as the Schlagintweit brothers to explore the roads to Kashgar and Yarkand. In addition, Pyotr Semenov participated in the Berlin nestors-led initiative to expand geographical knowledge of South and Central Asia and support its manifestation in topographical maps. The talk focuses on efforts to reach Kashgar and Yarkand in the second half of the 19th century. The competition between Adolph Schlagintweit and Chokan Valikhanov, the role of indigenous intermediaries in gathering knowledge, and the desire to tap into the potential of valuable local commodities have shaped our perception of the southern Silk Roads. Kashgar and Yarkand were hubs for trade between Afghanistan, Semirechia, Kashmir, and British India. The Xinjiang Triangle represents a less significant case within the colonial opium regime, but with significant local impact on consumers, trade and profit. The exchange corridors were characterised by long-distance routes connecting rival empires, represented by Chinese administrative officials, British and Russian consuls, with Kashgar and Yarkand. The archival material presented, spanning a century from the 1850s, was recorded by European representatives on site and provides insights into the external perception of these oases on the Silk Road. Comparisons of favourable routes led to dreams of infrastructure projects to cross the Karakorum Mountains and Kunlun Shan, which were realised in the second half of the 20th century."

"Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Math. Peik Bremer is a representative of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Logistics at the Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS). His research focuses on education and training concepts in logistics, intralogistics and material supply systems, as well as technical logistics solutions. Prof. Dr. Barbara Mittler: "In der Geschichte der Volksrepublik China gilt die Herrschaft von Mao Zedong (1949–1976) als eine der umstrittensten Phasen. Nachdem er die Kommunistische Partei im chinesischen Bürgerkrieg zum Sieg geführt und China geeint hatte, setzte er radikale Sozialreformen und politische Kampagnen in Gang, denen Millionen von Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Insbesondere für die tödliche Hungersnot infolge des 'Großen Sprungs nach vorne' (1958–1961) sowie grausame politische Verfolgungen während der Anti-Rechts-Kampagne (1957–1959) und der Kulturrevolution (1966–1976) ist Mao verantwortlich zu machen. Dessen ungeachtet wird dem 'Großen Steuermann' in China bis heute eine große, von breiten Bevölkerungskreisen getragene Verehrung zuteil. Anlässlich seines diesjährigen 50. Todestages untersucht die Veranstaltung die um Mao Zedong entstandene Erinnerungskultur. Warum hat er immer noch so große Bedeutung, dass sogar Xi Jinping versucht, ihm gleich zu werden? Bei den Feiern zum 100. Geburtstag der Kommunistischen Partei (2021) wurde dies Bestreben sehr deutlich: Xi trug einen grauen 'Mao Anzug,' der ihn als direkten Erben des 'Vaters der Nation' markierte, er sprach am Tor des Himmlischen Friedens, platziert über dem Großen Portrait Mao Zedongs, um der 'großartigen, glorreichen und immer korrekten Kommunistischen Partei Chinas' und dem 'großartigen, glorreichen und heldenhaften chinesischen Volk' zu seinem 100-jährigen Bestand zu gratulieren. Dass nun dieses Verlangen Xis – Mao zu beerben, ja zu ersetzen – eine Anmaßung ist, ist keine Einzelmeinung. Dennoch mag es einem verwunderlich erscheinen: Wie kommt es, dass sogar Regierungskritiker ausgerechnet Mao auf eine andere, offensichtlich höhere Stufe setzen als andere Politiker? Woher kommt die so manifeste Mao-Verehrung – die etwa in Deutschland vor dem Hintergrund der Hitler-Vergangenheit besonders schwer nachvollziehbar ist – und wie weit ist sie verbreitet?"
