Government Scholarship of P.R. China (CSC)

The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China annually awards up to 20 government scholarships to excellent graduate students or researchers from Bavarian colleges and universities. In consultation with the Chinese side, respectively the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), it was agreed that BayCHINA nominates suitable candidates for a scholarship to the CSC. The BayCHINA is required to nominate only graduate students. Bachelor students in the final stage of their studies with excellent performance are also eligible to apply. However, students must have at least a bachelor's degree by the start of their study abroad program.

Forwarding to the CSC will take place after successful nomination by BayCHINA. Therefore, the complete documents must be submitted to us before the deadline mentioned below, so that an examination can be carried out before the application deadline set by the CSC.

The CSC scholarship is only valid for the People's Republic of China and not for Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau.

Only applicants with German citizenship can be nominated by us.

Without German citizenship or a Bachelor's degree, EU citizens can apply for the "EU Window Chinese Government Scholarship" in Brussels www.chinamission.be/eng/zglx/t1837317.htm. Another possibility is to apply for the BayCHINA program www.baychina.net/foerderung-stipendien/mobilitaetsbeihilfen/ (here it is also possible to apply for stays in Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau).

The documents should be sent by mail to the address below of the Bavarian University Center for China. Application deadline for the academic year 2022/23: 21/02/2024 (postmark).

Important: The online application form with all documents must be successfully uploaded to the "Chinese Government Scholarship Information System" by 08/03/2024.

Scholarships of the partner province Shandong

The Bavarian partner province of Shandong awards three to five scholarships annually, which have a similar funding framework to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarships mentioned above. The BayCHINA has nomination rights here, similar to the CSC's government scholarships.

Applications for both programs should be submitted to BayCHINA - in compliance with the respective application deadlines.

Funding opportunities from other institutions

Tuition fees for foreign students in China are higher than for domestic students and vary depending on the university, subject area and type of study (bachelor's or master's program, doctorate, language studies). For an academic year, the costs range from about €1,500 to €5,000, not including accommodation (source: edu-china-embassy.ch). Master's and doctoral programs as well as English-language programs are considerably more expensive than Bachelor's programs (source: DAAD).
There are various options for financing studies in China, including educational loans, foreign grants (Auslandsbafög) and scholarship programs. Many students use the possibility of a scholarship to realize their desire to study in China.

There are numerous scholarship programs from both the German and Chinese sides. It is often possible to apply to Chinese partner universities via the International Office of the home university. In most cases, no tuition fees are charged, since a Chinese student comes to Germany in the exchange. The International Office can also provide you with information on other funding opportunities for a study period abroad.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) awards scholarships for a wide range of disciplines, lengths of stay and study periods (for further information, please visit the DAAD scholarship database: www.daad.de/deutschland/stipendium/datenbank/de/21148-stipendiendatenbank).
Sometimes the probability of success in obtaining a scholarship is relatively low due to high numbers of applicants, therefore it is worthwhile to apply for the DAAD Self-Pay Program, a special offer of the DAAD and the Chinese government, in which students are waived the tuition fees at the Chinese university (source: DAAD).

The financing of your studies in China should be taken care of at an early stage, since many scholarship programs require an application already one year before the start of the studies.
